In the rolling green hills of Scotland, near the enchanted woods of Carterhaugh, there lived a young woman named Janet. Unlike the other girls in her village, Janet was bold and fearless, her spirit as untamed as the land she called home. Carterhaugh was a place steeped in mystery, where whispers of fairies and the rule of the powerful Fairy Queen kept most villagers at bay. It was said that those who entered the woods rarely returned.

But Janet wasn’t one to be frightened by stories. Drawn by her boundless curiosity, she ventured into the magical forest one day. The air shimmered with enchantment, the trees seemed alive with secrets, and a strange, soft light glowed all around her. It was there, beneath the great boughs of an ancient oak, that she met Tam Lin—a handsome knight with sadness in his eyes.

Tam Lin revealed his sorrowful tale. Once an ordinary man, he had been taken by the Fairy Queen and bound by her spell, forced to remain in Carterhaugh under her control. Janet felt an instant connection to him, a pull that only deepened as they spent more time together. Soon, their bond grew into love. When Janet discovered she was carrying Tam Lin’s child, her determination to free him became even stronger.

Tam Lin told her of the danger he faced. Every seven years, the Fairy Queen had to pay a terrible price—a human sacrifice to hell. He feared he would be the next offering. But there was hope. He explained that the spell could be broken on Halloween night, when the fairy court would ride through Carterhaugh. Janet would have to wait by the path, pull him from his horse, and hold on to him no matter what shape the Queen’s magic forced him to take.

As Halloween arrived, Janet prepared herself. Hidden by the roadside, she waited for the fairy procession. The night was alive with eerie music and shimmering lights. When Tam Lin appeared on his horse, Janet leapt forward, grabbing him with all her strength.

The Fairy Queen’s magic unleashed its fury. Tam Lin’s form shifted wildly—he became a roaring lion, then a slithering snake, then a piece of burning iron, and finally a glowing coal that seared with heat. But Janet, with her unwavering love and courage, held on through it all.

At last, the magic broke, and Tam Lin returned to his human form, free at last. The Fairy Queen, furious at her defeat, cursed Janet, but her power was spent. She could no longer take Tam Lin back.

Together, Janet and Tam Lin left the enchanted woods of Carterhaugh behind, their love stronger than any spell. Janet’s bravery and unshakable heart had not only saved Tam Lin but also proved that even the mightiest magic could be overcome by fearless love.
